EU Commission publishes laundry and dishwasher detergent phosphates Regulation

The European Commission has published in the Official Journal a Regulation to restrict the use of phosphates and other phosphorus compounds in consumer laundry and automatic dishwasher detergents, in order to reduce the level of phosphorus discharged to waters. The regulation states that from 30 June 2013 a standard dose of washing powder must not contain more than 0.5 grams of phosphorus. Likewise, phosphorous in dishwasher detergents must not overstep a limit of 0.3 grams by 1 January 2017. The regulation was adopted in February following an agreement with the European Parliament at first reading in 2011. Further information is available at: EU Official Journal
