Canada amends CEPA 1999 Toxic Substances List (Schedule 1)

On 5 October 2016, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act 1999 (CEPA 1999) Toxic Substances List (Schedule 1) was amended as per SOR/2016-251, adding the following substances in numerical order: 134. The following petroleum and refinery gases: 40 site-restricted petroleum and refinery gases (PRGs) 4 industry-restricted PRGs Schedule 1 contains substances that meet at least one of the criteria set out in section 64 of CEPA 1999. If a substance is found to be “toxic”, the Canadian Ministers of the Environment and of Health recommend that the substance be added to the Toxic Substances List (CEPA 1999 Schedule 1). The federal government then works with the provinces, territories, industry, non-government organisations (NGOs) and other interested parties to develop a management plan to reduce or eliminate the harmful effects the substance has on the environment and the health of Canadians.
