Method for determination of manganese toxicity in children residing in polluted areas

In this study, the authors describe the diagnostic method for determination of manganese toxicity in children residing in polluted areas. The method uses whole blood analysis for manganese levels by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, plasma antioxidant activity, and plasma malondialdehyde content and the correlations of analytical data are examined for simultaneous dependences. The Mn toxic action in children is declared when high blood Mn + low plasma antioxidant activity, high blood Mn + high plasma malondialdehyde, and low plasma antioxidant activity + high plasma malondialdehyde combinations are detected. The method has increased accuracy and high diagnostic information value. The method was tested on 168 children from the Russian Perm region.
